Eight of Jac Batey’s Future Fantasteek! sketchbooks acquired by the V&A

In March 2026, following three stages of rigours peer review, eight of my sketchbooks were acquired by the V&A. The sketchbooks, which contain work used for the first ten issues of the Future Fantasteek zine series, will be housed in the museum’s Prints and Drawings collection alongside the likes of Rembrandt, Damien Hirst and Beatrix Potter.

Speaking of the acquisition, Annemarie Bilclough (Curator of Illustration at the V&A) said  “The V&A is delighted to confirm acceptance of these striking sketchbooks, which make a valuable addition to our large illustration collection in a range of processes, as well as forming a fascinating visual diary and snapshot of a decade of life in Britain in the 2000s.”

By highlighting the importance of traditional artistic processes and the centrality of the sketchbook to illustrative practice, I hope my work underscores the significance of human made art in an era of wherein more and more visual practitioners are threatened by an increasing reliance on AI.

When not on display in the Museum or loaned to another institution, Jac’s sketchbooks will be available to view on request in the V&As Prints and Drawings Study Room.

Future Fantasteek! Does Inktober 2016

I've just FINISHED Inktober 2016. The point being to make an image using ink every day during October and share of social media. There's a screen grab from Instagram below, I'll add the final images to this blog when it's all done and dusted. Here's a flick through my sketchbook...

My rules:
1. make image in sketchbook
2. only use black, white and red ink or felt pens
3. can add collaged elements ie. tape, paper, staples, stickers
4. can use rubber stamps I already have but only with black or red ink
5. show the materials used in the photos
6. stamp the date on the image

So here are the first batch as seen on Instagram

I'm also sharing them on Twitter

Future Fantasteek! No.17 FINISHED

Future Fantasteek! Issue No.17 is ready to go in the envelopes.
This issue is called Photoshop Yourself Happier

More details to follow...

New issue! 'Photoshop Yourself Happier' no.17 is well underway.
I've been experimenting with drawing digitally as well as in my sketchbook with felt pens, for this issue. Kind of remixed photos or another version of collage, if you like.

I love that I can 'undo' drawn lines but the other half of me is saying "why should I undo anything?"
Does digital mean I faff around longer with an image?
I'm not sure yet, but will report back when I've thought about it more.

Here's an example of what I'm on about.
My old paper, my photo, my scribbles...oh my.
